Natural Sugilite
Sugilite is a rare gemstone known for its beautiful violet, purple and lavender colors. It was first identified in Japan and named after Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi. The finest gem-quality material is especially associated with the Wessels Mine in the Kalahari manganese fields of South Africa.
Sugilite ranges from pale lavender to deep purple, with the richest and most evenly colored material being particularly desirable. With a Mohs hardness of approximately 5.5–6.5, it is commonly fashioned into cabochons, pendants, rings, beads and collectible gemstones.
